Our friend and neighbour, Drea, lost her son, Jakob, to cancer in his brain stem almost three years ago. She is coordinating a fundraising event this year for BC Children’s Hospital to commemorate the three-year anniversary of his death.

Hello my name is Drea Beye and I am organizing this fundraiser in memory and honor of my son Jakob Slater who fought bravely against cancer in his brainstem. This June 9th it will be three years since he lost his battle at the age of 6 & 1/2. We spent a lot of time at the Oncology Department at Children’s Hospital and would like to raise money to help out their needs to care for other families. Please donate online by or if you would like to donate via cheque please make payable to “Balding for Dollars” mailed to 938 West 28th Avenue Vancouver BC V5Z 4H4. Please reference Jakob with a “k” on the cheque.

We are looking for volunteers who are willing to shave their heads or have six inches or more they would like to donate to make a wig for a child. These volunteers would fundraise by collecting pledges with pledge sheets you can print online. You can also have a group that will go out and raise for one shavee or you can go out with a pledge sheet for Team Jakob with a “k”. To register as a team member go to “How you can help”, then click “register your own event”; you will then be able to select join an existing event. I myself will be donating over a foot of hair, my son Warik age 3 & 1/2, and my mom will also be shaving their heads too.

We also need volunteers to help at the event; or any questions, please contact me dreabeye@gmail.com.

Please come and join us for a BBQ, bouncy castle, popcorn and lots of fun on June 9th at Cedar Drive Elementary School from 12-4p.m.

We are also looking for donations of items to also help raise money at the event. Gift certificates, small prizes for games, raffle draw baskets or large items for silent auctions would all be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at dreabeye@gmail.com if you are able to help. Thank you all very much!!!

My grandfather died serving as a Chief Officer in the Canadian Merchant Marine in 1942 when my Dad was 20 years old. I don’t know a lot of the details because my Dad didn’t talk much about it but with the internet it is now possible to find out more information. I did a Google search and thought I would share a little of what I found.

My grandfather, Arthur Gilroy Pope was the Chief Officer of the steamship Chr. J. Kampmann (photo above) when it was sunk by U-boat U-160 on Nov 3, 1942 while carrying a cargo of sugar and rum. Out of a crew of 27, there were 8 survivors.

He also served during WWI and was Master of the Fuel Oil Tanker Elax when it was sunk by U-boat UB-43 on Oct 10, 1916. There were no casualties in that sinking.

My grandfather’s name is on a commemorative plaque in Halifax on a monument for the Canadian Merchant Navy, unveiled in 1967. There is a Wikipedia Article with information on the Merchant Navy and the memorial. I do have a photos of the plaque from my visits to Halifax in 1984 and 1999.

Terry Fox Memorial UnveilingI happened to be downtown on Friday so took a break to see the unveiling of the Terry Fox Memorial in front of the soon-to-be-renamed BC Place Stadium – see photo at right. This was a good lead-in to today’s Terry Fox Run.

I have had a number of friends affected by cancer, but also my dad passed away in 1990 after a three year battle with cancer. The Terry Fox Run is a good way to remember my Dad and make a contribution so that others can win their battles.

I showed up with my wife and three kids to ride our bikes in the event (the youngest on a Trail-A-Bike). In spite of what looked to be a wet-weather day, the turnout for the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Terry Fox Run was fairly good. Luckily, the rain stopped just as the introductory speeches started.

My wife rode the 5km loop at a slower pace while I took the kids on two laps to complete the 10km route. It was great to see a lot of friendly familiar faces out today, both participating and volunteering.

If you missed today’s run, or would simply like to make a contribution, you can Make a Donation Online on the Terry Fox Foundation web site.

Edward completed 10km on the Trail-A-Bike

Thanks to organizer Sandy Wakeling and his strong team of volunteers for putting on a great event. I’ll be back again next year.
